The 2027 World Rally Championship era is already beginning to create tension long before the new-generation cars officially take center stage.
With Rally Chile Bio Bío now underway, attention has turned toward Oliver Solberg, Toyota’s rising young star, after his involvement in the manufacturer’s development program for its 2027 WRC car became a major talking point among rally observers.

A dramatic claim circulating around the development program has suggested that the new generation of testing could eventually help force some of the sport’s older stars out of the competitive picture.
One particularly provocative version of the story even described the situation as a possible “staged scenario” designed to oust the older generation of drivers.
There is, however, an important distinction between what has been confirmed and what remains speculation.
There is clear evidence that Solberg has been involved in Toyota’s testing of its 2027 WRC prototype. There is also clear evidence that Toyota is using its current Rally1 drivers to provide feedback as the manufacturer develops a car for the radically different technical regulations that will arrive next season.
What has not been established is that Toyota, the FIA or any individual engineer has deliberately designed a program to remove older drivers from the championship.
That distinction has not stopped the story from creating a much bigger conversation about the future of the WRC.
Oliver Solberg Is Suddenly at the Center of the 2027 Debate
Solberg’s rise has been one of the most closely watched developments inside Toyota’s current WRC operation.
The Swedish driver is no longer simply viewed as a promising young talent. In 2026, he has become one of the central figures in Toyota’s fight for the drivers’ championship.
Ahead of Rally Chile Bio Bío, Solberg sits third in the championship standings on 175 points, behind Elfyn Evans on 216 and Sami Pajari on 196. Takamoto Katsuta follows on 160 points.
That position makes Solberg particularly important to Toyota’s future.
He is young enough to represent the next generation of the team while already possessing experience in the current Rally1 machinery. That combination makes his feedback valuable as Toyota prepares for an entirely different technical era.
And that is where the 2027 testing story becomes especially interesting.
Toyota Has Already Put Its Young Drivers Into the 2027 Program
Toyota’s development of the 2027 car is not a new project.
The manufacturer began testing its prototype before the 2026 season and has already accumulated more than 2,000 kilometres of running across asphalt, snow and gravel.
Before Ott Tänak joined Toyota’s testing program, the prototype had already been driven by Juho Hänninen and Toyota’s current Rally1 drivers, including Elfyn Evans, Oliver Solberg, Takamoto Katsuta and Sami Pajari.
That detail is crucial.
The testing program is not simply a young-driver experiment.
Toyota has deliberately used experience from different generations of its driver lineup to understand how the new car behaves and where development work is still required.
Solberg’s participation therefore does not prove that Toyota is attempting to replace its veterans.
Instead, it shows how seriously the manufacturer is treating driver feedback during the development phase.
The 2027 Car Is Not Simply a Faster Version of Today’s Rally1 Machine
The biggest misunderstanding surrounding the story may come from the assumption that Toyota’s 2027 prototype is simply another evolution of the current GR Yaris Rally1.
It is not.
The 2027 WRC regulations will introduce a very different philosophy.
The new cars will be subject to a cost cap of approximately €345,000, while the technical concept will be based heavily around current Rally2 architecture.
Among the major changes will be a new suspension philosophy featuring double wishbone suspension, with braking and steering systems derived from current Rally2 specifications.
Toyota has also used its current GR Yaris Rally2 as an important benchmark during development.
That means test times must be interpreted carefully.
A driver producing an impressive result in the prototype is not necessarily proving that the car is already faster than the current Rally1 generation.
In fact, Toyota has acknowledged that the prototype is still effectively a Rally2-level benchmark in its present development state.
The goal is not simply to produce a spectacular test time.
The goal is to create a reliable, competitive and technically compliant car capable of surviving the demands of an entirely new WRC era.
Why Solberg’s Test Performance Has Attracted So Much Attention
This is where Solberg’s name becomes particularly significant.
When a young driver performs strongly during development testing, the reaction is naturally different from when a veteran produces the same result.
Solberg represents a generation of drivers who could potentially spend most of their careers inside the new technical era.
That makes his feedback strategically important.
The situation becomes even more interesting when compared with the roles of Toyota’s more experienced drivers.
Elfyn Evans remains one of the leading championship contenders.
Sébastien Ogier continues to demonstrate that experience remains an enormous advantage.
Takamoto Katsuta has established himself as an important member of Toyota’s Rally1 structure.
And Sami Pajari has suddenly emerged as one of the strongest young drivers in the championship after winning three consecutive rallies.
Toyota therefore faces an unusual situation.
Its present is highly competitive.
Its future is arriving extremely quickly.
And Solberg is positioned directly between the two.
