Max Verstappen has unexpectedly submitted an urgent request to the FIA for a special inspection of Kimi Antonelli’s car, immediately after the Japanese Grand Prix.

The Formula 1 world has been shaken by an explosive development following the Japanese Grand Prix. Max Verstappen has officially lodged a complaint with the FIA, expressing serious doubts about the legality of Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes. The Dutchman, visibly frustrated after yet another dominant victory by the young Italian, claims that “unexplained technology” made the difference at Suzuka.

According to sources close to the Red Bull team, Verstappen reportedly possesses video footage showing an unknown device being attached to Antonelli’s car just before the start of the race. This device, which according to Verstappen is not included in the technical specifications approved by the FIA, could potentially have affected the car’s performance during crucial moments in the race.

“This is no longer about competition, this is about integrity,” Verstappen reportedly told a small group of journalists after the race. “If this is allowed, we might as well stop racing.”

The timing of the accusations is striking. Antonelli has just secured his second consecutive victory and appears to be becoming a serious title contender. His performance in Japan was particularly impressive: especially in the final stint of the race, he displayed a speed and control that surprised even experienced drivers. While competitors struggled with tire wear and loss of grip, Antonelli seemed to effortlessly continue improving lap times.

Red Bull Racing's Dutch driver Max Verstappen prepares to speak to the press ahead of the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka on March 26, 2026.

This had already raised questions within the paddock, but no one had expected Verstappen to come forward so openly and aggressively with accusations.

Under pressure from these allegations, the FIA launched an emergency investigation almost immediately. Technical inspectors scrutinized Antonelli’s Mercedes right after the race. The car was completely dismantled and every component was checked, including systems that are not normally inspected as standard procedure after a race weekend.

The atmosphere in the paddock quickly turned from festive to tense. Mercedes remained remarkably quiet and issued only a brief statement: “We are fully cooperating with the FIA and are confident that our car falls entirely within the regulations.”

Behind the scenes, however, tension mounted by the hour. Teams awaited the outcome of the investigation nervously, while fans and media worldwide speculated about possible fraud. Social media exploded with theories, ranging from advanced energy storage systems to banned aerodynamic aids.

And then, just a few hours later, the FIA came with an initial conclusion.

According to the official report, not a single illegal device was found on Antonelli’s car. All systems were found to comply with Formula 1 technical regulations. The alleged “mysterious component” to which Verstappen referred was, according to the FIA, a standard part that was misinterpreted.

The reaction to this outcome was immediate and intense. Mercedes felt justified and stated through a spokesperson that the accusations were “unfounded and damaging.” Antonelli himself responded calmly: “I focus on racing. What happens off the track, I leave to the teams and the FIA.”

But perhaps even more striking was the reaction of Verstappen himself.

Eyewitnesses report that the Dutchman was visibly surprised by the outcome. Although he did not offer a public apology, he reportedly admitted internally that he had “expected more clarity” from the investigation. Nevertheless, he remained critical: “If everything is legal, then perhaps we need to review the rules.”

The controversy therefore does not seem to be completely over yet. Although the FIA has closed the file for the time being, questions remain about how such large performance differences are possible under the current regulations.

What this situation makes particularly clear is how tense and competitive the current Formula 1 season has become. With a new generation of drivers challenging the established order, and top teams operating at the limit of the rules, every race seems to be decided not only on the track, but also off it.

For now, Antonelli’s victory stands. But the shadow of doubt, however unfounded according to the FIA, will continue to hang over the paddock for a long time.

But behind the scenes, calm is anything but restored. Several teams are reportedly holding internal discussions regarding Mercedes’ performance and Antonelli’s sudden rise. Engineers from rival teams are analyzing data in detail, searching for even the smallest advantage that could explain the difference. In a sport where milliseconds decide everything, mistrust is never far away.

Pressure is also growing within the FIA. Although the investigation has been officially concluded, there are calls to introduce stricter controls at the upcoming races. Some team principals are even advocating for unannounced inspections before the start of a Grand Prix to rule out any doubt. The incident has clearly struck a sensitive chord.

For Antonelli himself, this means that every upcoming race will be under a magnifying glass. Every lap, every pit stop, every strategic decision will be closely monitored. The young driver, who until recently was primarily praised for his talent, now suddenly finds himself at the center of a storm of controversy.

Verstappen, on the other hand, seems determined to ramp up the pressure. According to insiders within Red Bull, this is just the beginning of a broader strategy to call Mercedes’ dominance into question. “We are not letting this go,” a team member reportedly said. “If there is even a grey area, we will expose it.”

The rivalry between the teams has thus reached a new level. What began as a sporting battle on the track threatens to escalate into a political and technical war behind the scenes. And with a long season still ahead, there is a strong chance that this conflict will flare up again.

Fans all over the world are watching tensely. For if this case has proven anything, it is that in Formula 1, nothing is ever as simple as it seems. Behind every victory, there can be a story – and sometimes that story is more explosive than the race itself.
