British boxing legend, ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed, has shared his candid thoughts on the highly anticipated rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury. The rematch, set to take place later this year, follows their historic bout in May where Usyk handed Fury his first professional defeat, capturing all the heavyweight titles and adding to his legacy as a former undisputed cruiserweight champion.
In a recent interview with iFL TV, Hamed expressed his admiration for Fury’s contributions to the sport of boxing. “Look, I’m going to be honest. Tyson has already put his stamp on the sport big time. He’s done unbelievable in achieving what he’s achieved already. I don’t think people should forget that, I think people should always remember how big he’s become in the sport and what he’s created. There’s been no character like Tyson Fury.”
When pressed for his prediction on the rematch, Hamed expressed his hopes for a Fury victory but acknowledged the formidable challenge Usyk presents. “I always knew the first fight was going to be very hard for Tyson because the IQ of Mr. Usyk is something else. He’s had all those amateur fights and all those championships. He’s come through as undisputed champion at cruiserweight and now undisputed as a heavyweight.”
Hamed highlighted the difficulty of the task ahead for Fury, while also expressing his desire to see the British boxer triumph. “Listen, I think it’s going to be very hard for Tyson. Me personally, I would love to see him win that, that would make my year for him to win that fight. Do I think he’s going to win it? I think it’s going to be hard, I think it’s going to be very hard.”
He further praised Usyk’s exceptional skills and status as a future Hall of Famer, a recognition he also extended to Fury. “I hope he does but Oleksandr Usyk is on another level, he’s a future Hall of Famer, as is Fury.”
Despite leaning towards Usyk, Hamed did not rule out a Fury victory, emphasizing the British fighter’s potential to make a comeback. “We want the Furys so much to win. It is not impossible for him to win that fight – Tyson can come back and box unbelievable, we saw him hurting him with some uppercuts it’s not as if he can’t do it. If Tyson fights in the right way and does it in the best way, then in my eyes Tyson could do it.”
