Kyle Busch has been removed from the NASCAR Cup Series points standings.

Busch died Thursday at age 41 after contracting sepsis due to pneumonia. According to his death certificate, Busch had bacterial pneumonia for “days to weeks” and developed sepsis, which led to the formation of blood clots in his blood vessels.

According to Fox Sports, NASCAR decided to remove Busch from the official points standings “after discussions with [his team, Richard Childress Racing] about how to handle Busch’s death and to express condolences to those who will see his name in the standings.”

His name no longer appears on the standings on NASCAR’s website.

Before Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 race, Busch was 23rd in the points standings and had accumulated 217 points after the first 12 races of the season. He secured two of the season’s first top-10 finishes in the final three races after finishing 10th at Talladega and then 8th at Watkins Glen.

Busch is the most-winning driver in all three NASCAR national championships with 234 wins. His most recent NASCAR win was on May 15th at Dover in the Truck Series. He is the all-time leading driver in both the O’Reilly Series and the NASCAR Truck Series and ranks ninth in Cup Series history with 63 wins.

However, his last victory was in 2023, when Busch secured three wins in his first season with the RCR team. As RCR struggled to compete, Busch’s win rate declined. He only had eight top-five finishes in his last 84 Cup Series races, after a remarkable 246 top-five finishes in his first 678 races.

And now, NASCAR must continue the season without that name appearing every weekend.

In an internal announcement, the league reportedly wanted to avoid fans constantly seeing Kyle Busch’s name on the standings and being dragged back into the pain every time they watched the standings.

But on social media, the reaction was incredibly mixed.

Some understood and supported the decision as a humane gesture. But many other fans felt that removing Busch’s name from the standings too soon made them feel like NASCAR was trying to “close this chapter” too quickly.

“He was still a part of this season,” one fan wrote.

“Removing his name from the standings makes it even more painful.”

What made the emotions even heavier was that before his death, Busch had just begun to show signs of a resurgence in form. After a difficult period with Richard Childress Racing, he consistently finished in the top 10 at Talladega and Watkins Glen, leading many to believe the remainder of the season might witness the final comeback of a legend.

No one expected those results to become the final lines of his NASCAR career.

Now, each remaining race of the season will carry a sense of loss.

No more Busch’s furious radio blasts.

No more reckless divebombing.

No more car number 8 charging into corners fearlessly.

Only historical numbers remain… and a void that NASCAR will likely take many years to fill.

And perhaps most heartbreakingly:

Kyle Busch has finally disappeared from the NASCAR rankings.

But he will never disappear from the memory of the sport.
